Best Dressed: Our Favorite MOB Looks from Real Weddings!

Let’s face it, your big day is also a really BIG DAY for your mom too. In fact, she’s probably been dreaming of your wedding longer than you have. But, for a lot of moms, finding the right dress to wear can be stressful. You don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard but you also want to look like the Mother of the Bride, not the grandmother of the bride. So many MOB dresses tend to lean uber-conservative and, well, [dare we say] frumpy. Forget that, your mom deserves better! We’ve rounded up some of the chicest MOB looks that we’ve featured in real weddings on SMP. So grab your ma and a glass of wine and scroll through this inspo together, there’s sure to be something that catches her eye.

 

What To Look For

When we sat back and looked at our favorite MOB dresses, we noticed a few things that they had in common. 

Color

As the MOB, you want your mom to stand out, not just from your guests, but from the rest of the wedding party. So, don’t feel like your mom has to wear the same color as your bridesmaids. But it helps if the color she’s wearing complements your wedding color palette. You can never go wrong with a neutral but steer away from black. If you want a darker shade, look to jewel tones like deep sapphire blue and burgundy. We also love a MOB in champagne! That being said, don’t be afraid to let your mom play with color. Your wedding is a time to celebrate so let her wear a color that expresses the joy of the day.  

 

Texture

Play with texture. Bridesmaid dresses tend to be solid fabrics like crepe, chiffon, and satin. Help your mom stand out by choosing a dress with some dimension like 3-D flowers, lace, beading, and embroidery. 

 

Draping

Moms tend to like a little more coverage when it comes to their personal style, that’s why so many of the dresses that will pop up in your initial MOB dress search will have sleeves (some of which are downright hideous). But that’s not the only answer! With the right draping on a dress, you can not only achieve a bit of coverage, but you can also highlight their figure and accentuate all those gorgeous curves. Instead of sleeves or (God forbid) a pashmina, consider a dress that drapes off the shoulder, it offers a similar amount of coverage but looks oh-so-chic. Leave em all saying, “she got it from her mama”. 

 

Where To Look

Now, this is the key…In order to find a cute MOB dress, don’t look for a MOB dress. Instead, just look for a pretty formal dress that your mom gravitates to. Most department stores have a great selection of formal dresses, most of which are available for immediate purchase. For classic silhouettes, a mid-range retailer like Macy’s will have some good options. If your mom is artsy or willing to be a bit adventurous, higher-end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom have some unique options that will really help her stand out.
