#SMPWedding101 – Tips for Keeping Lipstick in Place

I absolutely loved my makeup for my recent wedding and after seeing some pics, I’ve learned the brighter the better for me – like these bold looks I’m loving! But it doesn’t do me any good if the color comes off before I even leave the house. So we connected with Melanie Dial, founder of Bridal Makeup MD for her tips on making sure that fab fuschia or pretty plum stays put no matter what!

TIP #1 | USE A GOOD LIP EXFOLIANT.

Fresh Sugar Lip Polish is one of the best lip sugar scrubs on the market. Before applying any lip product you want to make sure your lips are prepped. Post scrub, lips are left smooth, protected and hydrated. Dior also makes a fabulous lip balm called “Creme de Rose” that contains rose water as one of it’s main ingredients, which has been proven to hydrate lips.  This product is perfect for hydrating lips that are cracked and dried; it’s a must have and great staple for your makeup bag!

TIP #2 | USE A LIP PENCIL TO NOT ONLY OUTLINE YOUR LIPS, BUT TO ALSO FILL THEM IN ENTIRELY.

This creates a foundation of color for the lips that helps your lipstick adhere and last longer.  This one technique alone can extend the life of your lipstick by several hours and will give you longer wearability by providing an additional layer of color.  Sisley-Paris has one of the creamiest lip liner formulas on the market!

TIP #3 | FOR MAXIMUM STAYING POWER, USE A LIP STAIN OR 14 HOUR MATTE LIPSTICK.

YSL and Dolce & Gabbana have some of the most vibrant lip stains on the market, and NARS has a great line of matte finish lip colors to choose from that will last all day.  For a great drugstore option, check out Revlon’s 14 hour wear lipstick.  They have a wide variety of long lasting, very wearable colors for everyday.

TIP #4 | FINISH WITH TRANSLUCENT SETTING POWDER.

After you have prepped, applied your lip pencil and your selected shade of lipstick, go ahead and set your lips with a translucent setting powder.  This additional step will ultimately be the finishing magic that will have you reapplying a lot less frequently. Load powder onto a puff, shake off any excess, pat gently, not applying too much pressure around the outer perimeter of your lips. This is especially helpful when wearing red and will give a perfectly polished finished effect to the lips that will last.

TIP #5 | IF YOU NEED TO FRESHEN LATER IN THE DAY, BITE YOUR LIP!

Dior makes a lip product called “Lip Glow,” a Color Reviver Balm that actually stimulates the blood vessels in your lips and pulls the natural pink pigment found naturally in your lips to the surface.  This is a must have and great staple for your makeup bag! If you even bite your lip prior to applying the lip balm, it’ll speed up the process. Later in the day if you need to refresh your lip color, just bite your lip again and the color will magically reappear!
