A Wedding Marks a Huge Milestone for ALL the Relationships in Your Life

We are always the first to say that getting married represents a major milestone in the life of a couple. It’s the next step, a new and uncharted chapter to embark on together, and one of the most ‘adult’ things you’ve probably done, so far (of course, there are a lot of them that come after turning 18!). An engagement is certainly a turning point for the two of you, and one that’s completely deserving of all the fanfare, celebration, and excitement that comes after that ring, but it’s important to recognize that an impending wedding also earmarks a change in your relationships with the first loves of your life - parents, siblings, cousins, and best friends from the beginning, etc. And when such a time is upon you, taking a moment to love on those VIPs and thank them for everything they’ve done in the past, are doing at present, and will do in the future is so special.

When we launched our Style Me Pretty Shop, we not only wanted to fill it with items that would add all the pretty to your wedding day, we also wanted to curate bits and baubles, gifts and goodies that would bring magic to every event over the course of your engagement. From delightful cards that commemorate the all-important ask to your best girls and decorative tissues to help dry their happy tears to mugs and tumblers that remind every single one of your sisters that you’re stoked to have them in your bridal squad, they might not be engagement ring-rivaling expensive, but they’re invaluable nonetheless.

A Whimsical Secret Garden Meets Monet’s Water Lilies Wedding

When two worlds collide the results are captivating. A powerhouse team of wedding experts came together with an original concept to create an ethereal, secret garden-inspired editorial. When they arrived on the grounds of their venue The Clifton they couldn't help but remark on the resemblance to the painting Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies by Claude Monet. The inspiration then shifted to an event experience combining the two concepts together, which Karen Duckett Events pulled together beautifully. Inside the sailcloth reception tent florals by Floral & Bloom inspire. Each detail was artfully captured by cinematographers Deanna and Grant Harrison of Harrison Films and film photographer Hana Gonzalez of Weddings by Hana. How to Become a Professional Event Planner

The difference between a good event and a great one often comes down to the details, and that’s where an event planner usually steps in. Creativity and a good eye for detail aren’t enough to make you successful, though. You’ll need the right tools - and the right education - to get started.

What Is Event Planning?
Few things are more enjoyable, or talked about, than a good wedding or celebratory event, but unless we’re in the thick of it, we don’t often think of all the work involved in making them happen. Event planners are frequently thought of as mere party planners, but the reality is that it’s a nuanced job with a lot of detail involved. In addition to many different types of events to organize, event planners’ duties range from budgeting, conceptualizing themes, creating timelines, arranging appointments, and booking vendors for things like food, music, and photography. They are the full network of support for the host or hosts, ensuring things run smoothly and even offering a helpful ear or shoulder to lean on should it be needed.

Do I Need to Take an Event Planning Course?
Because event planning is more than just picking out a venue, food, drinks, and music, it helps to learn what other skills are needed from those who have experience. You may have a great eye for detail and know what trends are popular, but event planners need to be professional, possess strong communication skills, and be business savvy. With NYIAD’s Event Planning course, you’ll learn the basics about different types of events like fundraisers, weddings, baby showers, and corporate events. You’ll also learn how to network and market yourself for a busy, competitive job market.

Though there are traditional elements to events that will likely remain unchanged, the global pandemic has also brought on a new set of details to be considered. Most venues now have updated contracts with new stipulations, states’ regulations frequently change regarding crowd sizes, and some hosts make it a point to ensure the safety of their guests by providing masks and sanitizer. More corporate events are moving online, but still require organization and coordination. All these changes create a larger, more intricate to-do list for an event planner, so top-notch skills based on a well-rounded education are a must.

You’ll also need to know how to get the word out that you’re open for business and good at what you do, so NYIAD incorporates marketing and networking lessons to help you start your own business. The curriculum covers tips and advice for self-promotion and brand image on social media as well as blog maintenance, so you can be on the path towards creating a comprehensive business plan.

Can I Learn Event Planning on the Job?
Even though the number of events over the past year have been drastically reduced, the Bureau of Labor Statistics still predicts that demand for event planners is increasing. There is expected to be a big rise in the number of events taking place over the next few years, so event planners will likely need additional help from assistants. By working with an already-established planner, you can gain hands-on experience while improving your resume. None of this has to impact your education, though. You can work on earning your event planning qualifications at the same time since NYIAD’s classes are all online and self-paced. You can customize your studies and coursework around your work and family schedules.

Wedding Decor and Wedding Accessories Aren’t the Same, but They’re Still Extras That Matter

Although they sound kind of the same, wedding decor and wedding accessories are actually pretty different. Generally speaking, decor is a category that will have a formal delineation in your overall wedding budget - usually around 7-10% of the total spend. Whether they’re signs, strings + strands (garland and ribbon are some of our faves), or creatively-styled installations, the decor has a purpose - and that’s to help elevate your vows and curate a vibe for the day, from start to finish. Guests can’t miss decor, it’s all around them: accentuating the bar at cocktail hour, embellishing the reception tables during dinner, dialing up the festive factor of your photo booth, etc. But with accessories, the impact is a lot more subtle; here, you won’t be looking to make an impression as much as wanting to add special finishing touches to the entirety of your wedding timeline. That’s right, Style Me Pretty’s wedding accessories take a bride from newly-affianced to ready-for-the-aisle, all while celebrating ‘happy tears’ that are bound to stream in between.

If you’re following us, you might say “why do I need accessories if they’re just going to fly under the radar of my guests?” It’s true, a lot of these items might not even cross your party goers' minds, but that’s OK, if they bring you and your bests joy - even if it’s behind the scenes on the morning of your wedding or in your bridal suite - that’s all that counts! If it involves your flower girls and ring bearers, though, we can totally count on the accessories bringing lots of “AWWWS” from the audience when the kiddos are walking down the aisle… Just saying!

The One Wedding Category That Couples Can Forget About, but Really Shouldn’t

Last month, we dove into the real details of budget planning for a wedding, because as much as celebrations come without rules these days (and really, they don’t, you have creative license to make your day whatever you want it to be!), it is useful to have a guide for your expenses when you’re the bride - when you’re the groom, for that matter, too!! Whether you have $5K or $50K, $10K or $100K tucked away for tying the knot, you can spend the money however you wish, just don’t forget to keep these categories and percentages of the total cost in mind:

(Again, this is just our Style Me Pretty take on a balanced budget, you and your planner may work out something nuanced and different, based on your own event priorities - and that’s great! Just remember that your allocations should have a rhyme and a reason to them, you won’t want to overspend too much on a certain consideration and have it take away from the funds left for other things)
