The Meaning Behind a First Look and a Few Things That Can Make It Even More Special

Last month, we got familiar with all the reasons why a first look is a fantastic idea (and still is, always is!). Today, though, we’re going to rewind a little bit and uncover more about its origins, because a first look is still a pretty modern practice. For as long as weddings have existed, ‘tradition’ has held that the bride and groom do not see each other prior to their ceremony. The original first look happened when the bride walked down the aisle, joining her soon-to-be spouse at the altar. Of course, so many customs and rites of passage have evolved, grown, and matured over hundreds (if not thousands) of years, including the very rigid construct of marriage and forever partnership, altogether, which only started getting more flexible over the last 10, maybe 15 years. A man and a woman exchanging vows is just one of many different types of unions possible today, and by no means is it the standard. So, while there are lots of things to love about tradition, we love tweaks to the script even more!

How to Not Let Bad Wedding Weather Rain on Your Parade

After everything that has transpired in the last year and caused couples to chart out entirely new courses for their wedding days, we’re ecstatic that things are slowly returning to a semblance of normality (although we know that ‘normal’ isn’t really a thing anymore, and we kind of like it that way). Contingency planning isn’t a walk in the park no matter what the circumstances, but we don’t think we’d be speaking out of turn if we said that we’d happily get back to weather-related fallbacks if those were the only ‘just in case’ considerations on the table. Rainy days, windy days, too-hot temps or too-cold conditions can absolutely do their best to put a damper on your day, but if you have alternate accommodations and amenities at the ready, you’ll be just fine. That’s no lie, either: we’ve written about buckets of bad-weather best days ever and they’ve all turned out . After all, if the two of you can put on rain boots and jump in puddles when the pressure kicks in, you’ll be in a much better position to weather future storms together - and that’s marriage goals, for sure! 

So, where should you start when your pre-wedding to-do list is already flooded with things to figure out? Well, first things first, remember that there is a difference between not letting weather bother you and not caring about the weather at all. A relaxed and stressing-less attitude is great, because it keeps you flexible and allows you to roll with the punches, but you’ll still need to plan ahead and have plans A, B, and yes, even C in place before the potential big day clouds roll in.

There are a lot of details to think about when you’re planning a wedding, and we could literally do a whole article on ALL of them (we love lightning rounds! This or that - it’s just so much fun!). But one of our absolute favorite ‘should we, shouldn't we’ considerations is about first looks. You probably already know what they are, because #engaged, but if you aren’t familiar with the term, we’ll break it down for you. A first look, defined = The moment where a couple sees each other for the first time, before the ceremony. Actually, it can happen between the couple, the bride and her bridesmaids, or the bride and her father, and it’s not mutually exclusive, either; you can opt for one or ALL of the debut scenarios on your own special day.

Before we touch on all the reasons we’re #teamtotally for first looks, though, we’ll say that the final game play lies in your hands only. Tradition and timing are two of the biggest things influencing the first look decision, and they’re solid and completely understandable points. If the two of you have been thinking about seeing each other for the first time at the altar for as long as you’ve imagined what your wedding day would look like, then don’t derail your dreams, tradition is a big deal and nothing to compromise on.  Just know that if timing is a chief concern of yours (and here we’re talking about needing to push up your ‘ready for photos’ time check), your photographer will 100 percent help you troubleshoot all of the trickiest ticks in your timeline.
