Creative Ways to Make Sure Your Guests Don’t Melt At Your Summer Wedding

Strapless dresses, chilled drinks, a slight breeze in the air, and a vacation mentality: all reasons summer is one of the most popular seasons to have a wedding. But, there is one major downside: the heat. And while the warmer weather shouldn’t keep you from holding your ceremony or reception (or both!) outside, you should make sure your guests are comfortable. Here are a few creative ways to keep them cool.

Hand out chilled, scented towels
Have you ever been to the spa, or even a hot yoga class, and had a chilled towel infused with a calming scent placed on your forehead or the nape of your neck? If so, you know how effective a simple towel can be. Take a nod from this bride, who DIYed Lavender Oshiburi towels and kept them in the refrigerator until ceremony time—her guests stayed cool and calm thanks to the lovely lavender scent.

Provide cold drinks during the ceremony
Just like cold towels, a cold drink can instantly uplift a warm guest. Keep the summer vibes going and offer seasonal options like lemonade or fruit punch in a variety of flavors. For an added touch, add a fun straw or pretty cup—just be aware of your locale, you may want to avoid glass if your ceremony is on grass!

Give sunglasses out as pre-festivity favors
When dressing up for a wedding, sunglasses may not be on your guest’s lists of must-have accessories. But, once the sun is shining, they’ll wish they had a pair. Combat their dilemma by providing sunglasses at the start of the event. You can even personalize them with your names, wedding date, or motif for an instant—and easy—party favor.

Have water readily available
This one seems like a no-brainer, but it is often forgotten. Lemonade and fruit juices are a pretty touch, but when the sun is beating down, all your guests will really need is water. Get a stainless steel bucket, fill it with ice, and add a bunch of water bottles—it’s an easy addition that will make a big difference.

Set up a misting station
Imagine how pleasantly surprised your guests will be to see misting stations set up as they walk to and from your ceremony space. These would also be great for an outdoor reception; how fun to walk through them after a night of dancing!

Put decorative fans on ceremony seats
There are a few ways to do this one: you can get one big fan and place it somewhere that will keep everyone cool, or you can provide individual fans at every guests’ seat. Have the fans work double duty by printing your ceremony program on them!

Add sunscreen to the bathroom basket
You are probably already creating a bathroom basket, so it’s easy to make them summer-friendly. Add some sunscreen so guests don’t get burned while you say “I do,” plus some cooling wipes, oil blotters, and maybe even mini misting bottles for an extra touch.

Make it sweet and cool with popsicles
Get nostalgic with your guests by offering these yummy treats as a pre-ceremony delight, or during cocktail hour before the reception. You could even incorporate them into your signature cocktail (or make them adult popsicles and infuse liquor into them) for an added dose of fun.
