Playing with Art.com
I've been using Art.com as a source for specifying art for client projects and using on client concept boards to convey how art selections will fit into a room setting. I recently had the opportunity to experience a new app from Art.com: the SwitchArt app. A fun app that allows you to upload images (your pictures) to the app, select to be printed, & easily switch out with a magnetic backing for an ever changing art look.
The SwitchArt app from Art.comSwitchArt is the simplest way to change out prints, often and easily, in the same frame. Watch a tutorial here to see how it works. The great thing about SwitchArt is if you want a new look, simply peel off the print and replace it with a new one in seconds. No hammer required. No need to buy a new frame.
The new Art.com SwitchArt App makes things even easier and allows you to bring your photo stream straight to your walls. Simply download the app, buy a pack, and begin uploading personal photos from their camera roll, Instagram feed or Facebook page. Each pack includes a SwitchArt™ Magnetic Frame in the color and size of your choice, and a number of prints you select.
Art.com's line up of mobile apps for art selection and ordering.
One tool that is a great feature on Art.com is the ability to view different frames and mat features for art pieces. I use this for client project selections and screenshot the images for my concept boards. It's such a great way to incorporate the right look into a room design - or helpful for the consumer trying to select the best frame option.
Incorporating art ideas and selections into a gallery wall concept board for a client.
Have fun playing on the Art.com website! And if you ever need design advice laying out a gallery wall with your selections from Art.com please feel free to contact me!

Bling, Copper, and Fur...When in Germany!
-
Who doesn't need a furry sheep stool in their lives? I rounded up this lil guy while at the Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt, Germany earlier this year. I'm still anxiously awaiting his arrival to my Buckingham Interiors + Design Showroom in Chicago…it's a long trek from Germany!
He's also got a fleecy suede friend tagging along for the ride too:)
I was so fortunate to be a part of the 1st ever Blogtour for Modenus visiting the biggest consumer trade fair in the world. I saw so many amazing new introductions in the world of gift and table top decor.
One of my faves, copper, made a huge statement throughout….
I also always can't resist a great hair-on-hide piece…especially when it is dyed lilac!!! How fabulous is this hue???
Big shout out again Veronika Miller, Editor in Chief & CEO of Modenus and her amazing Modenus Team!
Please check out more highlights of my amazing Ambiente Tour experience on the Ambiente Blog!

A Visit & Experience At Bosch
-
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend an event with Bosch Appliances at their headquarters in my (native) Orange County, CA. The two day event included a handful of designers and bloggers to experience, learn, and interact hands-on with the Bosch line up of products. (One thing I can say is we were very well fed over the course of just a few days!)
Our first evening began with cocktails and this view, from Laguna Beach, CA at The Deck restaurant.
The evening progressed to a sunset dinner hosted by Bosch at The Deck restaurant where we met and talked with many of the a Bosch team members.
Bosch even added their "stamp" to our desserts.
Early the next morning we were straight over to the Bosch Experience & Design Center, a full showroom of product displays and a full functioning kitchen. I took to Bosch's integrated coffee machines. The built-in coffee makers provide everything from coffee, espresso, cappuccino, at the touch of a button in record making seconds. As a coffee connessier, I was addicted. And kept going back, for more, and more, and more. As everyone knows! So good.
By late morning, we were learning everything about Bosch design and engineering with demonstrations in their modern state of the art kitchens.
And by noon we were in the kitchen ourselves, with interactive cooking and preparing our lunch for the day! (Bloggers seen here teamed up with Bosch employees.)
Fortunately everything cleaned up well, in the quietest of dishwashers from Bosch.
Our afternoon was spent with presentations by Dwell and round table discussions.
Thank you to Bosch and Dwell for hosting us!

My "Pinch Me" Moment
-
A snapshot of the just some of the beautiful flowers on our photoshoot last week for a national magazine - so exciting! I can't wait to share this feature, a real "pinch me" moment. Lauren Haskett Fine Design has been blessed with so many amazing clients over the past almost five years. We are wrapping up some great projects and are now accepting clients for Spring/Summer 2015. Please email me at lauren@laurenhaskett.com to inquire about working with us! We take on all types of projects - single room, renovations, but I have to say my passion is new construction. I absolutely love getting in at the very early stages and working with the architect, builder, and client to create the perfect home. Trust me, it's never too early to call an Interior Designer when planning your new build! I can only take on a few new constructions at a time so let me know if you are building and would like to talk to me about working together!

{my nightstand via instagram}
I finally splurged and treated myself to "Mirasol" Euro Shams by Matouk and I could not love them more. Scallops are just one of my favorite details and making my bed isn't as much of a chore anymore. I just had to share my favorite bedding with you.

Tile Trends for 2015, and Win a Free Trip to Coverings!

Here are some of the latest trends to expect at this year’s show:
Once considered a more “retro” design, hexagons are now making a huge comeback, adding a unique element in designs modern to traditional. Hexagon tiles are available in sizes from small to large, with a 10-11” size among the most popular. You can find it in porcelain, ceramic, stone, and exteriors, as well as 3-dimensional and even paired with the other trends – including wood.
A suitable choice for both interior and exterior, wood porcelain has become very popular over the past few years. Seen as an attractive and easy-to-clean alternative to real wood, digital printing techniques have allowed the wood tiles to look as close to the real thing as possible. Manufacturers are now adding additional style and design by printing patterns on top of the “wood,” such as damasks and other bold prints.
The emergence of pop art-themed tiles has been quite prominent across design trade shows, including Cersaie 2014. These tiles are designed with bold colors and often incorporate the use of 3-D, a technique Alena has seen across many emerging trends. Artist collections are also hot, as Alena highlights collaborations with Keith Haring and inspiration from Roy Lichtenstein.

Design Source: fiber and water
-
I was recently introduced to the online source of Fiber and Water: a collection of accessories, including wall art and pillows, printed on burlap. Hand-crafted in Maine, with many patterns having a nautical theme, I was instantly attracted given my beach and boating upbringing on the Southern California coast. So much so, I encouraged Phoebe of Fiber and Water to reach out to our local boutiques, especially those of my hometown of Newport Beach and Balboa Island. Here are some of my favorite finds!
Love this coral pillow in teal.
The Reef Knot: Remiscent of my boating days.
A collection of map prints are available in both pillows and wall art.
Of course, I had to find my home state.
Vintage prints are also available.
Monograms and custom prints make for great gifts.
For the dog lovers: cute pug prints.
Last but not least: I'm loving all the pattern prints!
A fun orange chevron.

Copper Crush!
-
I'm feeling like a pretty lucky lady! 2015 has kicked off to a fabulous start.
It's been a good kind of crazy busy with lots of design projects of both new and previous fave clients and amazing opportunities for travel as well!
My first trip of the year to Las Vegas was a double dose of fun with KBIS--The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show--and a quick lil visit to Las Vegas Market!
I was honored to attend KBIS with Cosentino, the global leader in natural stone and quartz, to reveal their first ever designer collaboration series- known as the "Influencer Series" with my talented cohorts-Kerrie Kelly, Courtney Cachet, Kim Lewis, and Mark Williams.
My color was inspired by the combination of the urban sophistication of the city and my interior design work in Chicago, along with the elements of the Southwest that speak to a natural and elemental mysticism. I have a second home in Phoenix, AZ and the colors of this desert paradise are incredibly inspiring. The mineral‐rich shades found in the Camelback Mountains highlighted when the sunrises over them really served as the catalyst for Copper Mist. Copper Mist offers mineral‐rich shades that highlight the resurging popularity of copper, offering a color that provides a sophisticated, yet earthy look with strong movement.
My daughter's new Vizsla puppy Penelope fits right in with the copper trend!!
I was sooo excited to finally unveil ….Copper Mist!
Power panel in progress below and check out more of our Trendspotter action at KBIS here in this video!
This year Cosentino celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Silestone. I'm so honored to be a part of this rich history.
I was happy to have the chance to sneak over to Las Vegas Market and visit my dear friends at Global Views. My line of decorative accessories, lighting, accent furniture, pillows and rugs with Global Views launches this fall at High Point Market. I am excited beyond words for this extravaganza in October.
They sure know how to host a market party!
The Global Views showroom looked beautiful as ever rocking this copper look paired with deep navy blues for a stunning combination.
Copper is all the rage currently as it is a signature melding of shiny gold and silver. It is glam, regal, yet not snobby!
I loved seeing shimmering specks of copper in this gorgeous console and wall display within the Phillips Collection Showroom. Thank you for the tour Jason :)
Between work, there was of course lots of laughs and it was so nice reconnecting with so many wonderful colleagues I am fortunate to call dear pals!
Rose, Kelly, Joann, Laurie, Jamie, Ron, Patty, Kerrie and Blog Tour...Cheers y'all!
Even made some new friends…"Oh hey Vanilla Ice, fancy meeting you here…."
A city after my very own heart….we share the shoe love.
It was a ball Vegas….until next time!!

Wash The Winter Blues Away
- Every year Winter hits us (without much warning) like a ton of bricks. The first snowfall is magical and we're quickly reminded of all the things Winter has to offer: skiing, sledding, snowball fights, hot chocolate, warm sweaters, fuzzy boots and fires. It's certainly a time of year that, although cold -- very, very cold -- can bring a lot of fun through outdoor activities with family and friends. However, these long and cold days tend to drag on and on, and as soon as the groundhog sees his shadow (expressing 6 more weeks of winter) I think we're all ready for that first day of Spring. With that being said, I was recently inspired by an artist, Kerri Rosenthal, who doesn't live too far from where I grew up in CT. Her warm, expressive paintings not only bring brightness and cheer to a space but they also have an incredible way of lifting your spirits when you enter the room. Colors speak volumes and can transform your space and your mood on a cold Winter's day. Take a look at some of Kerri's work below and if your Winter is dragging on like most of us in the NorthEast, it might be time to illuminate your days and remind yourself that Spring is just around the corner.
If these paintings and colors don't brighten your mood and prepare you for warmer days ahead, I don't know what will. Not only will a fresh new painting bring inspiration and happiness to your mind but it will breathe new light in your home - that just might be needing a boost of sunshine. For more information on Kerri and her artwork you can visit her site here.

Never Met a Small Stripe I Didn't Like
One of my all time favorite homes (seen above and below) - the Madrid apartment of Carolina Herrera Baez as seen in Elle Decor
I seriously never met a small stripe I didn't like! So simple, so chic. It could work in pretty much any room. Carolina Herrera Baez proves you can even use in multiple rooms of your home. Walls, furniture, bedding, pillows, the uses are endless!
Another top favorite home - Ivanka Trump's old apartment as decorated by Emma Jane Pilkington. Proof that a small stripe is the perfect compliment to a mix of color and patterns.
Small pinstripe on this settee as seen in Kate & Andy Spade's NYC Home.

What Happens in Vegas….
-
2015 has certainly kicked off with a bang! It has been a busy, busy few weeks. I am momentarily jetting off to warmer temps to the always exciting Las Vegas for The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS)! KBIS is an inspiring show that introduces the latest industry trends, products, and technologies. Read behind the lines here…major dose of fun, feast, finds and friends!
Even more thrilling than the city itself, I am so excited to be reunited with my fellow Silestone by Cosentino Trendspotters- Kerrie Kelly, Courtney Cachet, Mark Williams, and Kim Lewis- where we will be unveiling our new Silestone colors for Cosentino within the "Influencer Series." The road has been a long and meaningful one as we launched our designs in NYC while viewing the Kips Bay Showhouse. Then, our travels to Spain for the color and product inspiration and innovation alongside the UBER talented Cosentino Product Development Group. They listened to our words and designed my countertop design just perfectly…Did you hear the word copper?!
Cosentino has long been the global leader in natural stone and quartz, known for its innovation and vast color offering. Their products are amazing for kitchens. My latest kitchen design project features a whole lotta silestone!
This is the first ever designer collaboration for Cosentino. This "Influencer Series" has been an exciting collaboration that has taken us across the world to Spain this past summer for inspiration and product development. We will be introducing our 5 stunning and distinct hues, all reflecting regional design trends that each of us draw inspiration from daily.
A hint at my hue--I was inspired by the mineral-rich shades and colors of the desert paradise surrounding my getaway home in Phoenix, AZ. Hope you enjoy!….unveiling will be tomorrow at KBIS!
We will certainly be sharing that with everyone…as far as everything else that happens in Vegas…well, y'all know the saying.
xx, Julia

Fun at Fleurish
-
Last month, just before the holidays, I received an invite from the cool guys at Clutter, to attend an event at Fleurish which included drinks and food and floral making arrangements. Fleurish is a local florist in Brentwood (Los Angeles) that provides a "bar" to create and make your own floral arrangements. A fun concept and a great place to team up for an event or party as the Clutter guys did!
And the question: Who/what is Clutter? They are a new company revolutionizing the idea of storing your extra "clutter" or perhaps a few things around the house you'd like "out" yet not ready to part with and maybe just don't have the space to store it either. The people from Clutter will come and package up those extras, haul it away, inventory it, and store it. All until you are ready or needing for them to bring it back!
The walk-in floral fridge to pick your own flowers!
Signage seen within the retail space.
The "flower bar" where creations are made!
My creation. It was deemed "organic" while my partner in crime Deanna (a wedding planner), churned out something much more architectural in design. Ironically. She has a keen eye inherent of her event planning business.
Gift bags and sweets, courtesy of Clutter, to take home.
And a special shout out to Josh from Clutter. He has skill when it comes to assembling gift bags. Thank you for the gifts Clutter! I have a special gift certificate giveaway to come!
For more info, visit Clutter.

Of all the colors, Black
-
I like black. While I love color too, there is something about black being basic, classic, elegant, and perhaps a basis for a neutral. Plus when used in a specific way, can become high contrast. It stands out. It is, of course, all the colors mixed together.
Come on in. Nothing like high gloss black doors.
Black kitchen cabinets: Classic, timeless.
Yet contemporary too.
Black exterior siding on a house.
Some black with white contrast and pops of color.
Black + White = Simplistic + Minimalistic.
Black furniture: vintage chic.
This black bathtub is the epitome of luxe.
I am sure this black matte refrigerator would be a conversation piece in any kitchen.
Graphic tiles with black.
Natural wood "almost black" cabinetry.
Black becomes very masculine in this bathroom.
Black framed glass shower doors: chic.
Coveting these black sconces.

What's Inspiring Me Right Now
-
This Palmer Weiss designed Presidio Heights Living Room is absolute perfection. The way she expertly mixes bold color, pattern, and different furniture styles is nothing short of design genius. Of course it doesn't hurt that my favorite color is gracing the draperies. Dark stained wood paneling seems fresh (not masculine)), and I can always appreciate a good furniture layout. Are you as taken with this room as I am?

Design Source: Davill Blinds
-
I was recently looking for a window treatment company for one of my online design projects and came across DaVill Blinds: a competitively priced site for shades, shutters, and blinds backed by the trust of two former interior designers. Given their motto is they never have a sale, I felt the stability of pricing and being able to buy when ready (vs the sometimes rush to buy my clients get to score a sale). In other words, a great resource for clients who may implement the selections on their own time and budget.
Sourcing shades for one of my online design projects.
DaVill offers various types of blind options, such as these basswood versions.
Blackout roller shades (great for bedrooms) come in a variety of colors.
Solar shades, like the above, along with other cellular and roller shades are available too.
And blinds that are available in a range of color options, metallics too

My Favorite color Represented at the Globes
-
I LOVE the Golden Globes! It's the best of TV and Film plus the Tina Fey + Amy Poehler duo is just the best. I was thrilled to see my "signature color" on the Red Carpet a few times last night! I just never tire of that perfect shade of yellow/green. Citron, chartreuse, acid yellow, saffron I love all the shades in that range.
{photo credit: Max Burkhalter via Lauren Haskett Fine Design}
I was lucky enough to have a daring client commit to my favorite shade for her dramatic Living Room draperies.
And just because - my girl crush, Emily Blunt rocking my favorite combo of white + turquoise + diamonds + braids.

Artist Spotlight: Alexis Walter
-
{Lauren Haskett Fine Design - photo Max Burkhalter}
I have a lot of Interior Design passions, but one of my top musts for a space is amazing art. Original art - whether it be a thrifted vintage landscape, antique book pages framed in a series, or even a DIY canvas absolutely brings a room to life. One of my favorite artists is New Orleans resident Alexis Walter. One day I will have the space and own one of her saffron/chartreuse pieces (my signature color). Check out her portfolio here! Have a great weekend!

Lauren Haskett Fine Design in the Press
-
{photo credit: Tiffany Edwards}
{photo credit: Tiffany Edwards}
Happy New Year! 2014 proved to be an eventful year for Lauren Haskett Fine Design in the best way possible - we celebrated great completed projects, amazing press, and the birth of my second baby girl, Emerson Louise in March. A week after Emerson's birth we were honored to receive the Paper City Design Award for Best Residential Kitchen (shown above).
{photo credit: Ryann Ford as seen in Trad Home Winter 2014}
We were also thrilled to learn that a long time client would be published in the 2014 Winter Issue of Trad Home Magazine highlighting her work as Creative Director of High Fashion Home, a Houston institution founded by her parents. I loved collaborating with her on her beautiful home.
The very first room I assisted her with was the Kitchen when she was building her home. I drew up the plans and worked with my client and designer, Sara Eliason (who was consulting with her as she built her home), to take the plans from paper to reality!
{photo credit: Max Burkhalter via Lauren Haskett Fine Design}
After the home had been built and my client was able to live in each space she had a better idea of how she needed each room to function. I was called in to bring completion and cohesion mainly to the Family Room, Dining Room, and Master Bedroom .
In her Family Room (shown above) she had already purchased her sofa, art above the sofa, tv console and had the pair of chairs on the right (we had them recovered in the navy Jim Thompson ikat). The goal was to marry the clean lines of her home with a more comfortable family friendly feel but without sacrificing style (what every family wants!). The rug was the missing element - once I found inspiration for the pattern, we then worked with Madison Lily Rugs to pick our colors and have the rug custom made. I am a big believer in custom pillows to finish off the room and of course that Hermes throw doesn't hurt either! The agate end table was one of my favorite finds! The navy and gray colors in the top worked with our scheme perfectly. The geometric velvet on the lucite based round stools are playful and are a nod to the great clean lined architecture of the home.
{photo credit: Max Burkhalter via Lauren Haskett Fine Design}
The Master Bedroom's great bones were accentuated with the custom Velvet Roman Shades with with Greek fret detail, new bedding, lamps, and the recovering of this amazing chair (seen below) in one of my favorite Schumacher fabrics.
{photo credit: Max Burkhalter via Lauren Haskett Fine Design}
The Dining Room was upgraded with an antiqued mirror wall, new chairs, rug, accessories, and amazing buffet I spotted while shopping at the High Point Market.

Hope you enjoyed this update, hoping to be blogging more in 2015!

Lauren Conrad's Colorful Beverly Hills Penthouse
-
Lauren Conrad's chic and colorful Beverly Hills penthouse was recently featured in InStyle magazine. Pictured above Lauren sits in her home office on a punchy orange tufted sofa and an area rug seen on the floor made from recycled silk saris.
Continuing with puncy colors is a custom rounded banquette in her breakfast nook complemented by an Eero Saarinen table.
Her high ceiling living room with graphics and a black and white theme is remiscent of an airy New York loft, which she wanted the room to have a feel for.
To add visual interest to the living room, she added moulding and brick veneer, then had it white washed to look more aged!
Her dark mirrored bar includes a black laquered ceiling.
The dining room table and chairs are vintage complemented by a contemporary light fixture.
A classic looking kitchen in all white with open shelves for stacking white dishes.
And the grand finale! Her dressing room closet: A full walk-in wardrobe.

Ms. Iisha Goes to Washington!
- We are so proud of our former intern, Iisha, who was chosen as a volunteer to help decorate the White House for the holidays! What an amazing opportunity and challenge! I don't know about you, but decorating my 1930s cottage for the holidays sometimes seems overwhelming, so can you imagine what goes into decorating a 55,000 square foot national landmark!
Each year a theme is chosen for the White House's holiday decor. I wish I could transform my holiday decor from year to year! This year's theme is "A Children's Winter Wonderland" which celebrates the Christmas spirit as viewed through the eyes of a child. Iisha flew to Washington D.C. on Thanksgiving Day and spent the next five days in a whirwind of holiday decorating, surrounded by tinsel and ornaments galore! The White House provides the volunteers with decor, tools, and inspiration photos to help them complete this enormous task. Iisha worked individually and as part of a team to decorate two rooms and a hallway in the East Wing of the White House.
Iisha with one of the many White House Christmas Trees!
A Winter Wonderland!
Iisha and the Obama's dogs- Bo and Sunny
This year's theme also honored the Armed Forces and their families. The East Wing featured a Christmas Tree decorated with gold ornaments which represented our nation's fallen heroes. Iisha also had the privilege of being chosen as one of a few volunteers to greet military families on a holiday tour of the White House. This was particularly meaningful for Iisha because her dad served in the U.S. Army.
On the final night of her stay, Iisha attended a volunteer reception where the first lady made a speaking appearance! To top it off, Iisha met Genevieve Gorder, who is hosting an HGTV special on the 2014 White House Christmas decor. The special will replay on December 24 at 7am/6 c on HGTV, so set your DVR and tune in!
Be sure to check out #WHHolidays for some behind the scenes experiences of White House visitors.
Congratulations Iisha on this honor and thank you for sharing your White House holiday experience with Material Girls!

Holiday Window Display at Christopher Guy
-
The Christopher Guy showroom on Beverly Boulevard, in the heart of the West Hollywood Design District, is in full festive holiday mode. The front windows are decorated with gifts and an elegant white tree among sophisticated Christopher Guy furniture pieces. I happen to pass by the other evening en route to an event and catpured a few pictures of the glam window display.
A view from the sidewalk of the Christopher Guy showroom on Beverly Boulevard.
Christopher Guy's iconic display of a tree, reminiscent of one I saw at Decorex while on Blog Tour London with Modenus.
One of the most elegant and glamourous holiday window displays on Beverly Blvd.
A glimpse into the showroom.
And on the other side is another window display - a complete living room vignette turned facing the street!
Would love your vote for a chance to win a spot on the Ambiente Frankfurt Blog Tour with Modenus, please click "Like" here and check out all the other great holiday window display pictures!
Happy Holidays!

From CHI and AZ to NYC and HPMKT!
-
What city am I in today? (Between the weather in Chicago this winter and the sunshine in Arizona, that answer is clearly obvious!) The last few months have been a whirlwind. I'm reminded every day of how lucky I am to be living my dream.
Next week I have the huge honor of hosting my first seminar at the Decoration and Design building in NYC! Hosted by Kravet fabrics, and joined by my dear friend and Executive Editor of Lonny Magazine, Irene Edwards, I will be sharing my experience of building an interior design brand and my trademark design aesthetic, Modernique.
Whether you are just beginning your interior design career or your realize that being an interior designer is your next must-do career, I hope you can join Irene and me as we share our secrets of building a successful business and brand within the exciting world of interior design.
"Modernique" Living Room featuring Kravet Chairs! This recent project of mine is hot off the pages of the most recent Luxe Magazine! Photography by Hausman and Associates
After a quick trip to NYC, it is then off to North Carolina for High Point Furniture Market! It's hard to believe it is that time of year again. I LOVE High Point Market. The most amazing thing about market is that you get to touch, see, hear, and visualize all the latest and greatest in interior design. It always inspires me and I bring those ideas back to share with my team and my clients.
I am thrilled to be asked to return as a host of a "Suite Spot Tour" at the Suites at Market Square! Please join me and my fellow fabulous cohorts- Crystal Palacek, Christian May, and Corey Damen Jenkins- as we share design trends and innovation as we see it. My tour is Sunday, April 6th at 2:00pm! Sign up today! A huge shout out to the International Market Centers and my pal, Gretchen Aubuchon for spearheading the fabulous festivities!
That Sunday, I am also taking over Instagram for market! Follow me on Instagram @designonhpmkt as I takeover and snap pics of all my fab finds!

Cuckoo for Camo
- I'm recently obsessed with anything camouflage which may or may not be trending at the moment -- but I'm not sure it matters when it comes to Andy Warhol's camo prints. If you like anything Andy Warhol, you're going to love these prints. Full of color and movement these pieces can certainly pack a punch. The versatility is endless too -- I can see these prints in a living room, a playroom, a kitchen, a kids room, a den..you get the point. If you can't afford the real deal, there are plenty of reproduction prints for sale at places like art.com - just make sure you frame it so it looks like an original ;)
The lime greens make me think of Spring which puts a smile on my face
A whole lotta fluorescent
A smaller scaled camo
Anything fuschia is bound to brighten a space
A series of colorful camos - genius!
These skateboards would be great in the kids space
Look what it does to a rather bland kitchen
I guess I've got a project ahead of me! I'm thinking I'll give this Warhol thing a whirl

The Power of One Piece of Art
- Most people struggle to find that one piece of furniture or the right throw pillows that are going to help complete their space -- without realizing that one single piece of art can do the trick. House Beautiful recently posted an article showing four different spaces that are dramatically improved by artwork. Take a look at these four spaces as well as four additional spaces I found that will show you how to transform your space. Art is of course very personal, so I'll leave that up to you, but I suggest spending the money on your walls. It changes the space and often gets people talking if it's placed in the right spot
This rather neutral room is quickly brightened with pops of yellow, red and azure
The bright orange velvet chair is brought to life with its accompanying bright painting
This entry without art would be exceptionally bland
This is a nice play on both color and geometrics
While this art is simple it still brings a sense of completion
Big and bold
This art brings the golds, blues and greys full circle
Don't be afraid to do anything oversize

The Lotus
- Last September while in London, I was lucky enough to visit Farrow & Ball ...the creme de la creme of wallpapers and paint! It was a rainy afternoon (and my birthday of all days!) and my husband wanted to take a cat nap before we went to my celebratory dinner, so instead of resting up too, I hopped in a cab on my own little adventure and booked it to the F&B store in Chelsea ten minutes before it closed. I was determined to catch a larger glimpse of their Lotus wallpaper (and a few samples)- a wallpaper I had been coveting for years.
I first heard about the Lotus paper when my mom saw it at Boxwoods in Houston and was dying over how gorgeous it was...we then posted a photo of it on the blog. This was almost four YEARS ago! I'm often sick of a wallpaper after four SECONDS so to still be coveting that precious Lotus paper four years later? Unheard of! (But I guess that means it was true love!)
So what I love most about the Lotus in particular are two things- 1) that you can hang it right side up (how it's traditionally supposed to be oriented) or upside down..the image above shows it "upside down" if you can believe it! 2) that it comes in two sizes- small and large. I'm partial to the large because I always "go big or go home" in design and the large was definitely more my style. The small is great but has a more traditional feel to it.
You may be thinking- "where have I heard that name- Farrow and Ball?" Well, Farrow and Ball is no newcomer! It was started in the 1930's by John Farrow and Richard Maurice Ball and the company has 43 showrooms across the UK, US, Canada & Europe as well as a global network of stockists carrying both paint and wallpaper. They are everywhere! In Dallas, you can now get it through the trade at the Lee Jofa showroom.
Here are some of my favorite images of the Lotus installed in different spaces- (as you can see, it can go more formal in a dining room or more casual in a laundry room! It can also go more subtle with the tone on tone colorway or more dramatic and graphic with the black and neutral one)
F&B even has the Lotus on the front of their building!
I'm happy to say that I finally bit the bullet and did the dark teal colorway of the Lotus in my small entry-
The Lotus makes the space seem SO much larger! I love how the shapes of the lotus practically "grow up" to the ceiling! I haven't been able to bring myself to put any wall decor over it, I just love it so much. Wallpaper is an investment but you get so much bang for your buck with it and it can make such a statement.
At first I was worried it might be too colorful, but the teal actually is so grayed out that it almost acts as a neutral and I love how it complements the orange-red color of the bricks on the exterior of my house.

Khloe Kardashian's Digs
- Have you been “Keeping up with the Kardashians” lately? Well, if you have, then you know the youngest sister of the Kardashian clan has put her Tarzana, CA mansion on the market!
It looks like after filing for divorce on December 13, 2013 Khloe is ready for a fresh start for 2014.
The 8000 sq. ft. home that the reality star shared with former NBA husband Lamar Odom for four years is for sale for a cool $5.499 million.
The gated Mediterranean-style home has 7 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a den, home theater, office and 3 custom closets according to redfin.com.
The glam and over the top décor throughout the home is exactly what you would expect from a Kardashian. Take a look inside!
Khloe's talented Los Angeles based interior designer Jeff Andrews is responsible for this "glam-traditional" office.
The two office chairs were vintage chairs that Khloe already owned and were simply reupholstered. Its great to see that celebrities re-purpose furniture too!
The Marilyn Monroe dining room has rich neutral tones and looks cozy for entertaining.
The dark browns from the kitchen continue into the family room on this spacious sectional. I love the custom pillows and saw this fabric on F. Schaumcher's website. If you noticed the same fabric was used on the desk chair in the office.
More custom pillows in the master bedroom backed by a chocolate velvet upholstered headboard.
The gameroom Jeff designed has fun pops of orange and a zebra area rug- a super dramatic space!
Her neutral bathroom is a mix of travertine stone and wood stained cabinets.
Lots of palm trees and lush landscaping...what else would you expect being in LA?
The outdoor living area looks like a resort right in their backyard! I bet she throws some nice pool parties here!
See more Kardashian and other celebrity spaces designed by Jeff Andrews on his website.

Design Trends 2014
- A new year is approaching and it's time to start thinking about what we want to change -- not only in ourselves but in our home which will ultimately help create a happy and warm environment for us to thrive in. We all start with the obvious resolutions such as: get healthy, cut back on the sweets and liquor, be nicer because everyone is battling something and be more charitable, to name a few. This year, why not make a resolution to fix up your home so that every time you walk through the door or go to bed at night you can feel complete. There's a lot to be said for selecting the right colors, the right lighting and a few things that are trending so your house doesn't feel like it's stuck in the late 80's. It only takes a few accessories or a fresh coat of paint to make these changes so you don't have to worry about breaking the bank. Better yet, if you have friends who are looking to give more and be more charitable - put em to work! Helping friends accomplish a project can be very rewarding and they get to enjoy the results every time they come to visit. Not to mention free bragging rights. This is the year to make your house a home.
The first step might be to look at the colors for Spring 2014 so that you're selecting things that are right on trend. Bring these colors into your throw pillows, smaller furnishings, window treatments and walls. You'll be able to talk shop and coordinate with your clothes and handbags!
A bold black and white stripe is sure to grab attention and it's very on trend. Think strong contrast and bold stripes
Bright yellow or "freesia" is just about as hot as it gets these days. Don't be afraid to add this bright pop of sunshine
Chevron has been and still remains to be trendy so why not do a subtle version with the layout of your wood floors. It will help create something new and fresh while remaining timeless
Add a little glam to your kitchen with the back splash, lighting or hardware. It's all about the jewelry in the room
I've always been a believer in mixing your metals and thankfully it's now being deemed as appropriate and trendy
Radiant Orchid is perfect for the kids bunk room or a playroom where you can have some fun and be more daring
Say goodbye to those boring wood cabinets and doors and give them some life with a fresh coat of paint and some new hardware. You can transform your kitchen in a matter of days and make it look like a million bucks
Don't be afraid to paint the walls in a dark navy. You've got enough "bright" in the room with the ceiling, trim, and other furnishings to keep it airy and light. A rich, saturated wall makes a nice statement
The powder room is the best place to do a funky wallpaper so go for the large geometric pattern you can't stop thinking about!
These are just a few ideas and there are plenty more out there. Let's make 2014 a year to remember and finish those projects you've been putting off for way too long now. I promise you'll rest easier at night ;)

It's a Wrap! A Napa Wrap!

As of last Sunday, the 2013 Napa Valley Showhouse at the Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena California is history. Sometime next year, many of its beautifully designed rooms will appear in the glossy pages of Traditional Home Magazine, but nothing tops visiting a quality show house in person and seeing it firsthand. And speaking of firsts, it was a first for me. Not just doing a show house: I've been privileged to take part in a number of good ones over the years. But I had never done one on the West Coast before. And if you haven't been there, let me tell you, the Napa Valley is one of this country's most beautiful areas. So of course I said Yes when they asked me! Yes yes yes!
Trad Home has been sponsoring showhouses for a number of years but the house they chose this time was unique: an expansive hundred-year-old farmhouse owned by vintner Peter Mondavi and designed by Willis Polk, one of San Francisco's most important historically architects. And while you know I always love to see what's new in the design world, I also love history, so this was a perfect chance for me to do one of my favorite things--blend the two!
The dining room still retained its historic wood paneling, so we introduced color with fabric--the fun Kravet Kelly Wearstler print upholstery on their custom chairs (thank you so for a fabulous job with expediting), the crazy cool Jonathan Adler for Kravet fabric sourced for the roman shades and the glistening Maya Romanoff wall covering above the plate rail-one of my favorite local Chi town vendors. Thank you also to Benjamin Moore for donating the paint for the ceiling and another shout out to Bloomingdale's for supplying all the tabletop accessories. Speaking of my dining room tabletop…. the showstopper was a one-of-a-kind ceramic masterpiece by Ohio artist Tara Winslow. I became obsessed with Tara's works when first spied at the High Point Market last Spring.
One thing I didn't do was use any wine-themed motifs--old labels, bottles, grape leaves, that stuff--because those things were all around us already. What would be the point? Instead, I used a series of blues & greens in our room: some soft, some vibrant, all beautiful, and, together, perfect complements to the warm tones of the wood. Plus a gigantic table big enough for the whole Peter Mondavi family. It featured a glass-topped gearwheel out from a historic European water mill, and let me tell you, getting that beast into place was a real feat for our heroic installers, who had to roll its ancient wood--very carefully--through the other designers' rooms without wrecking the floors. When we finally got it into place, we were all ready for a glass of wine. Maybe more than one!
But it wasn't just the installers whose efforts I need to mention. To everyone involved in this massive project--the magazine that invited us, the other talented designers I got to meet, the Charles Krug winery, the Napa Film Festival that benefits from all the visitors, and all the patient and professional work crews, a big Thank You from all of us at BID. Thank you for making me feel welcome at my first California showhouse. And to my own team--back in rainy, cold Chicago, while I was basking in the glory of a California autumn--you are the best! (But you already know that.)

Giving Thanks
- It's that time of year where the weather can be confusing, the foliage is in full swing and people are gearing up for the holidays. Thanksgiving is around the corner yet New York has already started to decorate for Christmas and Holiday songs have hit the air. Slow down! It's definitely a cheerful time of year and there's a lot to be thankful for so I've started to look around for some inspirational tablescapes -- while I'm thankful for the food we eat on Thanksgiving, I can also appreciate a well set table full of color and good cheer.
I love the cactus and cabbage flowers in this centerpiece. It's a nice break from your average floral arrangement
Candles are always a great way to "light up" a table
Baskets of foliage at their best
Bringing fruit on the table is a great reminder as to why we sit down and celebrate "thanks" with a meal
I love the idea of painting pumpkins white and marking it with a special statement or quote about what you're thankful for
Mother nature has given us plenty to work with and Fall is the perfect season to use what she has given us
Pears are one my favorite fruits to incorporate in a table setting
I love the wheat on these simple place cards
More pumpkins - toned down with white and grey
Bunches of wheat are great for the table or mantle
Using fall colors helps create a natural, soothing environment
However you decide to dress your table this year I hope you enjoy the season and take time to count your blessings and share your appreciation with the people you are thankful to have in your life.
What day is it?
It's today, squeaked Piglet
My favorite day, said Pooh

Holiday Market at Memorial Antiques & Interiors

{NAVY at Memorial Antiques & Interiors}
{NAVY at Memorial Antiques & Interiors}
Meg & I have had so much fun with our little space at MAI here in Houston. One of their BEST events is the Holiday Market. I am pumped! It is coming up on Thursday, November 14th and features not only all the fabulous booths decked out, but also trunk show vendors. I am a total sucker for all the jewelry designers and I still dream about the chocolate vendor that was there last time...
This year some of the special vendors include Presmer (I'm a huge fan), a custom pet portrait artist, custom monogramming, and silk ikat pillows just in from Turkey - that's just to name a few!
Another big draw is 20% off items over $100! Someone come by that bone inlay chest from me!

Angie's Style
-
Ralph Lauren Sea Pink! That’s what started it all. While browsing through Decorpad I found a space with a paint color I loved (as a possibility for my master bedroom) and reached out to the room's designer for the brand and the name of the color.
In just a short time I received an email from Charleston, SC based designer Angie Hranowsky with all of the paint's info. I know how busy designers are so I was completely shocked how quickly she responded and how gracious she was to hand over the paint info to me!
Angie is known for her eclectic mix of styles and non-traditional bold color selections. Her funky and fun design aesthetic has gotten her featured in several publications such as House Beautiful, Traditional Home & Domino Magazine.
Check out her website http://ift.tt/1dpEcJ3and you will agree Angie is a hip designer with great style. She has mastered the art of tastefully combining patterns, colors and furniture for a perfect finished look that will inspire you. I absolutely love her work!

Kappa Kappa Gamma Tablescapes
-
We just wrapped up the Kappa Kappa Gamma Tablescapes annual event hosted by the Dallas Alumnae Association and for this being our first year to be invited, we could not be happier with the showing and our debut!
Running around Dallas to find the perfect pieces to compliment one another, knowing that no idea was too extravagant, was draining but well worth the effort when we saw it all completed.
Nathan and I at the Tables by Candlelight event!
We were able to add drama with our centerpieces from Scout Design Studio! And we clearly can't get enough of agate coasters- these Jonathan Adler coasters were almost impossible to find because of the popularity of blue (the color of the year for 2014)!
The overall theme this year was harvest and so we wanted to play up the gold and orange tones contrasted with cobalt blue.
I love the patterned china plates (from Uncommon Market) balanced with the stems from the Forestwood Antique Mall wine glasses.
After spending so much time with our project, the best part is getting to walk around and see what everyone else has created.
This reminds me of the images Nathan discussed in his tablescapes post from a few weeks ago about beach and "under-the-sea" themes.
This centerpiece was a showstopper! The inclusion of a rug was a nice touch that added some charm and personality.
This table was so quirky with its library-chic aesthetic!
Most of the tables featured an over-the-top flower arrangement to capture attention. I like how pops of color are brought in to help ground the look with the plates and chair cushions.
There was such a range in colors and themes and it was great to see all the ideas on display at the Dallas Country Club this past week!

A Peacock Moment
Birds, like colors and shoe shapes, fall in and out of style. Flamingos were hot in the Depression and they came back in the Miami Vice era. Wood-&-copper mallard ducks flew across family room walls in the 1950s and a few years ago, we had a short, meaningless fling with owls (what was that all about?) but still, the list of birds used in decoration is pretty short. When was the last time you saw, say, a flock of crows used as a decorative motif? It's been a long time.
Let's face it, certain birds are simply more popular than others. I mean, its hard to think decoratively about birds that wreck crops or carry away cute baby bunnies for their midnight snacks! With that in mind, it shouldn't be a surprise that, this season, peacocks, the quintessential Art Nouveau bird, are having yet another one of their many moments, the same way they did in 1966, at the beginning of the Psychedelic era. Like the poet says "A thing of beauty is a joy forever".
I spotted the beautiful mounted specimens above while treasure hunting for antiques in Paris last summer and when I got back to the studio, I found an addition (one of many!) to our recently renovated conference area: this incredible PEACOCK DARK rug by English fashion designer Matthew Williamson, whose brand is known for incredible prints. It was gifted to BID from our good friends at The Rug Company!
The Peacock Rug is also available in a light colourway.
And for those who might hesitate to put such such a gorgeous piece of art on their floors, I have good news! Matthew Williamson's new Autumn 2013 collection of fabrics and wallpapers for Osborne & Little also features one of his signature peacock designs: “The Eden Collection is as heavenly as its name suggests: a riot of colours and patterns reflecting the British fashion designer’s diverse influences, from exotic birds to 1970s-style animal prints” - ELLE Decoration. This richly colored jewel toned collection (filled with lots of deep emerald, cobalt blue, plum, and gold tones) will be sure to inspire you as we enter into late Fall. It definitely inspires me!
How insane is this wallpaper? And I love how the polished chrome of the furniture echoes the metallic sheen of the paper!
For years, there was a silly prejudice about combining certain colors. "Blue and green must never be seen" used to be a common saying. Didn't those folks ever see a bed of iris? Or blue hydrangeas against bright green grass? Or--hello!--a peacock? For people not so hemmed-in by arbitrary decorating rules, peacocks have served as the direct inspiration for a lot of to-die-for rooms.
The Peacock Room, now at the Smithsonian in Washington, has been all over the place, but it started out in London, as an 1870s collaboration between shipping tycoon Frederick Leyland, the English architect Thomas Jekyll (who designed the room's walnut paneling and shelving to display Leyland's collection of Oriental porcelain and panels of antique Spanish leather) and the American artist James Whistler (yes, that Whistler) who proceeded to gild Jekyll's wood and completely paint over Leyland's treasured antique leather panels. The big reveal must have been like the Victorian version of Trading Spaces--OMG!--and not in the good way, either.
Yes, the finished room was stunningly gorgeous--it is in a museum, after all!--but it wasn't at all the what client asked for and the whole thing ended up in a nasty lawsuit. Quelle hot mess! So this room contains two important lessons for designers, one good and one bad: 1) Blue & green DO go together, but 2) Ignore the client's wishes at your own risk.
Driehaus Museum, photo by Steve Hall of Hedrich-Blessing[/caption]
Fortunately, that kind of disaster doesn't happen very often. In fact, here's another interior of the same period and with the same kind of richly glowing colors (this time, in glazed tile, not painted leather) and this time, the client loved the results! The room is in the Driehaus Museum in Chicago--just off Michigan Avenue, so don't miss it--and if you visit in the next few weeks, you can see another peacock-inspired creation in the museum's current Tiffany exhibit: this iridescent gold-mounted Favrile glass vase.
OK, this beauty isn't for sale, but these are exactly the kind of colors I'm always drawn to, so if you see the show and decide you're wanting a swirly glass piece in those colors--one that you could actually buy, that is, not just look at--we have the little piece below in the BID Studio. With a coat of Tiffany Blue lacquer on your walls and a few feathers in a tall nickel-plated cylinder, you can create your very own Peacock Room! And if you do, send us a picture!
Last stop: a rendering of a Peacock Room (painted for the Crane Company of Chicago) that doesn't contain a single peacock reference, only the colors of its plumage. This subliminal approach is often the most interesting, because instead of stating a theme explicitly, it lets the room's occupants discover it on their own. Sometimes, less is more, although, considering the level of finish in this room, "less" isn't quite the word. Either way, it's a knockout!
The takeaway lesson is simple: inspiration is everywhere. How you use it is up to you.

Come into My Parlour, or A Modernique Halloween...
-
OMG!! Last time I checked in, there was just a hint of a chill in the air and the trees still looked like summer, and then, suddenly, it's cold, half the trees are bare already--and tomorrow's Halloween! How can that be? What happened to October? Or, for that matter, September? Oh, wait. That's right. Since my last post...
Buckingham Interiors + Design opened a brand new showroom next door to our Design Studio on Grand Avenue, we took part in Traditional Homes' 2013 Showhouse out in Napa Valley and we did those things at the same time that we were designing & installing several major projects for clients here in Chicago. All that stuff might have had something to do with my absence around here lately. But, still: Halloween---tomorrow ? ? ? I just hope somebody else remembered to buy candy at home.
Speaking of sweets, though, am I the only person who looks at our way-cool Guatemalan ottomans and suddenly starts craving a snack? Say, iced donuts? With sprinkles? And, considering the season--apple cider?
And surely, other people besides me think of Mexican sugar skulls when they see our Morticia Chair--named after the seductive, black-gowned mistress of the decaying Victorian mansion on TV's The Addams Family. Tell me they do! They have to.
Morticia, of course, was the original Goth chick, and her slinky getup and dead-white makeup still inspires some people's Halloween costumes, but let's be honest: not everybody is (0r was) into black crape and seaweedy sleeves. I don't need to tell you who it was that always went out trick-or-treating in a sparkly pink princess dress or a fairy godmother's cape or a ballerina's tutu. I am convinced that Material Girls are born, not made.
Not me. Soooo not me, not even as a kid. I wasn't even born in 1951. But Happy Halloween, anyway, and if you haven't yet visited the showroom yet, do stop in.
If the team hasn't already eaten them all, you might even get a treat or two.

The Color Orange
- Halloween is just around the corner and the costumes are in full swing. It always amazes me how much goes into this tradition of ours in October and even though I'm usually not one to dress up, I fully enjoy seeing what others come up with from year to year. October is not only the month for Halloween, apple picking and pumpkins but it's the one month that invites the color orange into our lives more than ever. The rooms and wall coverings below have inspired me to incorporate more orange into my projects. It's happy, bright and warm - perfect for any home.

Making the Most out of Social Media
-
Designers in the Houston area, are you overwhelmed by all the Social Media outlets you know you SHOULD be doing? Can you really get a client from Pinterest? Should you start a blog? I am thrilled to be a part of a panel of Designers discussing relevant social media questions just like these, Wednesday, October 16th at the Decorative Center of Houston's Fall Market.
The panel will be moderated by a true social media pioneer and expert, Leslie Carothers. I am honored to be part of the discussion with esteemed designer Sarah Eilers of Lucas/Eilers, Designer BFF Meg Lonergan of LeSueur Interiors, awesome Paloma Contreras of Paloma Contreras Design and La Dolce Vita, and talented Designer and Blogger Samantha Penner who pens The Peak of Tres Chic. I think we each bring a unique perspective on how we have utilized Social Media outlets to build and propel our businesses.
The Panel Discussion starts at 2 pm. Make sure to also check out Legendary Designer, Mario Buatta, speaking at the Morning Keynote. I'm so proud to be a part of such a great Design Community - I hope to see you there!

These are a few of my favorite (OKL) things
- While browsing through the sales on One Kings Lane today, I came across quite a few things that grabbed my attention. Unfortunately, nothing is quite right for the projects I'm working on. Therefore, I thought I'd share some of my finds with you. There's got to be someone out there looking for a great deal and if it's not something I selected, surely you'll find something that's right up your alley as you shop around. My picks of the day:
Eugenie side table with reclaimed wood and mirrored top and base
A beautiful flat weave rug in pewter which will compliment any color scheme
A unique garden plan framed and ready to hang!
A simple greek key coffee table that's perfect for your den or family room
The Leona chair by McGuire
Abstract art 'Midday Migration'
Olympia side table
A painting titled 'somersaults'
A surfing painting for the beach house or surfin' addict

Trending – Ping-Pong + Billiards Tables!
- Are you ready to par-tay?!!! If so, you must have heard about the latest trend in fine dining...mixing the table itself with a table top sport.
The fascination with “table tennis” that blew up on the bar scene a couple years ago, beginning with the elite club, SPiN New York, has now made its way into the world of high end interiors.
These new versions are definitely more aesthetically pleasing, and most even double up as indoor/outdoor dining tables.
This ultra-modern version from James de Wulf, made from reinforced concrete, comes in white (pictured) or light grey. I actually just selected the light grey option for my home away from home in Arizona, that we have named Casa Lantana due to the abundance of this colorful foliage surrounding our property. Cannot wait to grab my paddle within our friendly confines! Last weekend in Phoenix we actually warmed up playing with our friends at The Yard , a local eatery repurposed from a car and motorcycle dealership, after eating way too many oysters. Crel and the hubs blew me away pretty quickly...I need some practice!
Perfect for a pre party, dinner party, or after party! Beer pong anyone?
Moving along to the latest in billiards, the master of making casual cool, James Perse, created this limited edition teak version, which doubles as a dining table when covered with the teak top (included).
With price tags for both options beginning at approximately $8000, they better double up as something!
If you'd rather not bring this trend directly into your own home, you can get your Ping-Pong fix on some old school tables at local hot spots like Parsons Chicken and Fish and Ada Street.
The tables on the patio are first sign up, first serve. Sounds like the perfect end of summer activity to me!
Enjoy these last days of summer before we all head back into the Fall grind. I am heading into a huge renovation of the space next door to our Buckingham I+ D Showroom to showcase even more design goodies for our 1stdibs presence as well as for our design clients. Also, a brand new website sharing 6 new projects will be unveiled before the end of the month. We are growing and I am so very proud and humbled. Much love to our chillens that are heading back to schools both new and comfie-and also both domestic and international.
Cheers to all!

Nate Berkus' latest West Village Apartment
- Nate Berkus recently sold his apartment on West 9th Street in the quaint West Village of NYC and bought a new one around the corner on West 10th/5th Ave. Although I can't quite afford the square footage that he's got, at least I know I'm in the right neighborhood! It seems as though he took a much calmer, neutral, serene approach to this apartment. All that white makes me a little nervous but I'm assuming he can reupholster it and have it cleaned in a flash. After all, he's Oprah's design child (AKA one of her favorite things)
Here he is all dressed up and ready to show off his new digs!
Even 5 million won't get you large bedrooms in NYC
The DR has a very natural, simple feel to it
The arched "greenhouse" windows are a nice addition in the kitchen
A shot of the LR without NB in it. A lot of white!
A neutral master bedroom with what looks like a high gloss painted ceiling?
And the terrace...a lovely amenity with view of the city
This is the floor plan of his duplex on West 10th/5th Ave

Obsession with Polka Dots
- The polka dot. It's been around for years and apparently it's one of this season's biggest trends. Has it ever gone out of trend? I remember wearing polka dots as a kid and for the longest time I thought of them as playful and juvenile. As an adult I went through my phases, a polka dot skirt here and a polka dot scarf there, but it never quite phased me why I was choosing to wear these things or if they were trendy. The polka dot was just there and available. It's a simple statement yet these days seems so sophisticated and fresh and apparently has lasting power. Therefore, I have a new obsession with the polka dot. Whether it's in my wardrobe, a fabric or a fun piece of art I find myself drawn in and wanting more. Am I a victim of this trend or have I always loved the polka dot?
Marilyn Monroe. Polka dot style at its best
Colorful, fun photography
Have fun with the scale when using it on furniture
mixing the stripe with the polka dot
The polka dot is perfect with a pair of jeans but you can mix it with just about anything - especially a coordinating stripe or solid
This fabric would coordinate nicely with a larger floral or ethnic print
Celebrities. They're just like us. They wear polka dots!
Different styles on different faces

Painting Walls & Trim the Same Color
-
My apologies for the lack of creative post title, but it expresses exactly what I want to talk about. I absolutely love when walls/trim/cabinetry are painting the same paint color, preferably in a high gloss! Now this isn't for the faint of heart, and it sure helps if you have very strong architectural "bones" to begin with. The first designer that comes to mind that does this frequently is Miles Redd, the second is Katie Ridder - probably because I'm obsessed with her use of turquoise.
A fabulous room by Miles Redd.
Above two rooms by Katie Ridder.
Not sure who designed this room but the black walls don't seem so imposing when you through in a dash of pink!
If lighter colors make you more comfortable, the above two images show more pastel hues. I especially like the soft pink room because I have feeling everyone's complexion just glows in this space much like in candlelight.
I also like warm whites or putty tones in spaces of architectural perfection. The perfect way to highlight beautiful paneling, like in this Dining Room above by Munger Interiors.
And then there's everybody's "Dream Paris Apartment" look. Herringbone wood floors and white paneling with intricate detail is something you just can't fake very well. Le Sigh. So would you do it, could you commit to one paint color everywhere? I sure could!

Outstanding Olympic Outfits
- The opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympics, was indeed quite a show. We certainly enjoyed watching all the festivities, especially the Queen's awesome entrance into the stadium! Another great highlight was watching the parade of champions. This year's summer games ushered in some fantastic inspiration from fashion. Fashion can be a marvelous muse for creating an unforgettable interior space. Here are some of our favorite inspirations from this year's Summer Games:
Cobalt, Orange & White: Holland
This year, Holland totally rocked their bold color pallet of cobalt, orange, navy, and white. Each athlete was exquisitely tailored in these designer outfits. A wonderful touch and homage to their homeland's national flower, can be seen here with a tulip pinned to each athlete's lapel. These colors are a fresh and trendy way to spice up any interior. The contrast that these colors make next to each other creates a statement that is sure to impress.
Mixing patterns with these exciting colors works well, and adds even more look to this stimulating mix of hues.
These deep navy walls with accents of orange is striking and at the same time, elegant and fun.
This luxurious cashmere blanket by Hermes is a definite must have statement maker. The unmistakable, classic Hermes orange and white will not go unnoticed! Also, these orange and cobalt painted vases would be fabulous on any mantle.
Aqua, Sunshine Yellow, & White: Sweden
Sweden's athletes were definitely noticed at this year's opening ceremonies. Their bright yellow and aqua stripes with white pants were definitely "spot on" for summer fashion. Even their sneakers made a statement, blue with yellow laces. Great attention to detail.
This delicious dining room makes great use of yet another bold color pallet. Beautiful, bright bamboo chairs in a cheery lemon yellow are definitely a focal point. The black accents of the doors and the chevron pattern rug help add a touch of chic to this fun dining space.
Add some colorful light and sparkle to your space with this amazing yellow chandelier from Cyan. This piece brings fun antique whimsy with its classic shape that is sure to liven up any space.
Check out this brightly colored room! The yellow sofas and bright blue pillows are festively summer, and help give this room its own signature look.
Kelly Green & White: Nigeria
Take a look at these fabulous white and green outfits worn by Nigerian Olympic competitors. Kelly green makes a luscious color statement against bright white.
This gorgeous green upholstered head board transforms this bedroom into a tropical retreat. The simple bedding with a classic green stripe is simple and refined, making a calm compliment to the statement making headboard. The bedside lamps with a clear glass base add interest to the room, without taking away from the clean, crisp feel of the space.
Another clean color pallet of green and white makes this living room feel swank. The modern floor lamp and glass top cocktail table make this space feel expensive, without going over-the-top.
The metallic accent pillows and chrome side table really adds some glamour and flash to this tropical living room. The palm tree is also a great touch of natural color. We also like the white cow-hide rug turned on an angle under the cocktail table. Definitively chic and modern!
Red, White & Blue: U.S.A
Who better than to dress our American Athletes than Ralph Lauren? This classic American preppy look was a fantastic representation of fashion directly from the USA. Navy blazers, white trousers and knee length skirts with berets and ties definitely has an Ivy League spin. Feel like standing up straight and saluting the flag? With and outfit like this, I sure do!
Using red judiciously is key in this bedroom. Red is a powerful color, and helps define the headboard, bedding and bench. The gold pendant fixture definitely adds a designer touch to the room.
Adding adventurous patterns makes these living rooms come alive.
This patriotic painted chest with gold accents demands attention. Finding unique furniture such as this, really adds a great deal of character to any room, and is sure to serve as a conversation piece!

Veranda's 25th!
- How time flies!
The celebration of Veranda Magazine's 25th Anniversary will begin this Thursday. Editor-in-cheif Dara Caponigro will be in Dallas on June 21st to celebrate the big event with a brunch and "master class" panel discussion with some of the biggest names in design, including Windsor Smith, David Easton, and Michelle Nussbaumer.
This event is one you definitely don't want to miss! It's open to the public and being held at the Interior Resources Showroom (1620 Oak Lawn Ave.) on Thursday the 21st, at 10am.
We had a wonderful opportunity this past week to chat with Dara Caponigro, who has been the editor of Veranda for the past two years. We picked her brain on just about everything- upcoming design trends, the magazine business, and the things she loves most about her job. Hope you enjoy getting a peek into her glamorous and exciting life as editor of one of our very favorite shelter mags!
Did you always aspire to be the editor of a magazine? If so, how did you work toward this job?
I suppose, in my 20s, I dreamed of being an editor in chief. But, then I had kids and my priorities shifted. Looking back, though, every job that came before prepared me for this one. I don't think I could have done it any sooner.
What is your favorite part of being editor-in-chief of Veranda magazine?
My favorite part of being an editor is working with my super talented team. They are rock stars: creative, smart, funny, and hardworking.
What has been your favorite Veranda magazine cover throughout the years?
There have been so many great Veranda covers. Personally, I would say it's a tie between March 2011 and March 2012. Each one captures a moment. They are magical and inspiring, but you can totally relate to them.
How do you discover the designers/rooms you feature in the magazine?
Designers generally come to us with projects. Our Decoration Director and I know so many of them because we've committed our careers to covering their work. Of course, we love discovering new talent, too. We have submissions meetings every two weeks or so and review everything that comes across our desks.
What do you typically look for in the homes you feature?
I always say Veranda has a classical backbone (mind you, that's different from traditional), but that we veer 30 percent from it. We like houses that show an understanding of what came before in design but have some surprises without gimmicks.
How do you determine upcoming design trends?
Our editors are always out and about, at markets, at press events, doing shoots in different cities and countries. Sometimes, we notice common threads and decide to do a story on what we see. More often than not though, we report on things that our editors, personally, are excited about and those become trends.
What patterns, colors, etc will be in style in 2013?
I definitely see an increased interest in pattern. Classic patterns like florals and chinoiserie are making a comeback, but they are being used with a more restrained hand than they were used in the 80s: a club chair here, a pillow there.
Since we are the Material Girls, we like to ask- what is your favorite design material?
It' hard to pick a favorite design material, but we just renovated a house and I am crazy about my bathroom. It's a mini version of the bathroom in the London townhouse of Veere Grenney and David Oliver that Veranda published in our Nov/Dec 2010 issue. It’s all white marble slab with a taupe and grey vein running through it. It is heavenly.
Do you think the emergence of blogs and online magazines have influenced the shelter magazine world?
The emergence of blogs has helped generate even more interest in the design world. That's good for everybody.
What do you see in Veranda’s future?
We have so many exciting things going on: a website redesign, an ecommerce partnership and a very exciting special issue coming up.
Thank you so much Dara for giving MG readers insight into Veranda's past, present and future! Happy Anniversary!

Blog Re-Launch and a Big Thank You!
- After ten long months (and I mean long) of painstakingly planning, designing, and creating our new blog site...we are so happy to say that it's finally up! (and I'm sure my family members and friends are happy too- they don't have to listen to me talk about it anymore!)
However, the site wouldn't be what it is today, if it weren't for these creative, hardworking and wonderful people:
Kathy of Moxie Design Studios
and Brooke of Fabulous Doodles by Brooke Hagel
They helped our vision become a reality. Thanks so much girls- you are both truly talented and such a pleasure to work with!
