Take a woodland barn in Washington state and gussy it up with a ballroom-style flair, and you’ve got juxtaposed design done oh so right. Loosely inspired by a lavish Marie Antoinette vibe with loose garden florals by Finch and Thistle plus cake from Tallant House, it’s a day made for the pages of SMP and the always fabulous Coco Tran captured the beauty. From The Groom… We met in Hawaii in mid 2008. Neither one of us were Natives to the Island of Hawaii. We met at a Starbucks outside of Audrey’s workplace and hit it off pretty quickly. I had lived on the island for a couple of years longer than Audrey had so I offered to take her to some of my favorite places around the island. One of my favorite places was the Maunawili Falls hike in Kailua. At the end of the trail is a waterfall with lots of great places to jump into the water. We had a lot of fun on that hike and we kept going out to do fun things around the island whenever we could.
Audrey introduced me to a lot of great food I’d never tried before. She had lots of fun introducing we to lots of delicious food and I was happy because each new food I hadn’t tried was another excuse to see her again.
In 2009 my time in the Navy was over and I planned to go to college in California. Audrey took a huge leap of faith and agreed to join me in California. She gave up going to the beautiful beaches every day in Hawaii to be a poor college student with me in California. We moved into a small apartment in Hayward, CA many miles and a mountain range to the nearest beach. When we moved to California in February of 2009 it was still beautiful and sunny in Hawaii, but it was very cold in Hayward. It was a very harsh transition, but Audrey and I still look back on those days as some of our happiest days together.
Audrey ‘s family lived in Seattle, so when we moved to California it was nice to be closer to them. We took trips up to Seattle a couple of times a year to visit Audrey’s friends and family. During those trips to Seattle I fell began to share Audrey’s affection for the natural beauty of Seattle and love of her family. While the rain and clouds that are Seattle’s hallmark don’t often make one picture an ideal wedding location, the truth is the natural landscape of the Seattle Washington area is perfect for the rustic style wedding we had dreamed of. Also, the weather isn’t as dire as it’s often portrayed to be.
Red Cedar Farm was the perfect venue for our wedding, because it’s fits our two personalities very well. Red Cedar Farm on one hand is a beautifully landscaped and manicured estate. It has a large green lawn and lots of trees, accentuated by natural wood benches and gazebos. However all of this prim beauty hides an exciting secret once you enter the large converted barn.
On the inside of the barn, instead of farm animals you find bar games like shuffleboard and even antique (but still in great shape and playable) pinball machines. Having simple games available to play was especially important because not all of our guests spoke the same language. We thought having games would be a great way to bridge the language gap. Ultimately, this location fit our two juxtaposed personal styles better than anything either of us could have imagined. We also released butterflies at our wedding as a symbol of our love for each other hopefully having a positive effect on the rest of the world, and our hopes to make our love a positive force.
Audrey wanted her Washington State barn wedding to have a loose Marie Antoinette theme and I loved the idea of contrasting the rustic farm venue with a gilded, ballroom design scheme. To achieve this, we employed a mix of rented vintage pieces – old clocks, jewelry boxes, packets of antique love letters, a French barn ladder, and art déco pottery with lush, organic florals in luxe gold urns. Gold rimmed plates, chargers and Chiviari chairs added to the ballroom look while stunning La Tavola linens added a final touch of elegance.
The garden inspired florals included local garden roses and dahlias, fresh blueberry branches, clematis, Annabelle hydrangea and Kent Beauty oregano. A sprig of rosemary at each place setting added a fragrant touch.
Guests wandered around the farm visiting the various resident animals and then took their seats for the ceremony on rustic wooden benches as Audrey and David were married under a metal arch covered in peach, blush and green blooms.
