Wedding Dresses 101 with America’s Biggest Designer

I’m not one to get starstruck, but when I first met Monique Lhuillier, I was fangirling. Hard. As far as I’m concerned, the designer can do no wrong. Her wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, fine jewelry and her new venture into fine paper are all masterpieces, and her latest Spring 2017 Bridal collection is no exception. So, we sat down with the queen of bridal to talk all things pretty. Get the scoop below!

What was the inspiration for the new collection? How did you translate your inspiration into the fabrics, finishes and silhouettes?

My Spring 2017 bridal collection is inspired by a woman running through a garden – I wanted to capture the feeling of being madly in love and someone who feels pure bliss. The romance and femininity were translated through fluid silhouettes and ethereal, lingerie-inspired elements. The color palette is a romantic combination of rose, pistachio, antique ivory and caramel, accentuated by occasional pops of fuchsia seen in three dimensional blooms.

What’s your one piece of fashion advice all Brides need to know?

When choosing a wedding dress, it has little to do with silhouette or trend and everything to do with how the bride feels in the gown. I always tell brides to follow their instinct. Women look their best when they feel comfortable and beautiful and it is all about selecting a gown that makes a bride confident.

The big debate: veil or no veil? Why?

It depends on the bride, but your wedding is the only time you’re able to wear a veil so I think a bride should wear one. I love intricate and delicate veils and have some beautiful hand painted ones in my collection this season.

If you were having a wedding tomorrow, which of your new dresses would you want to wear?

I would wear the Brooke gown from my new Spring 17 collection; it’s a long sleeve sheath with hand painted flowers. It’s a show stopper!

What are your five favorite dresses of all time? And what do you love about them?

Spring 2005 — Swan Lake

One of my first signature gowns featuring a spaghetti strap lace bodice with a full tulle A-line skirt and an accent sash. My Monique Lhuillier bridal Barbie was later inspired by this gown.

 Spring 2006 — Peaches & Cream

Loved this 3 piece gown, it’s an embellished lace corset with a full A-line tulle skirt and a satin sash. Pure confection !

Spring 2012 — Candy

Loved the delicate details of the embroidery and utilizing the blush color made for a perfect combination.

Fall 2015 — Elizabeth

Long sleeves and rose gold embroidery made this dress absolutely magical and unexpected.

Spring 2014 — Intrigue

This strapless trumpet gown is made with Chantilly lace, which is a traditional fabric, but the silhouette gives it a modern twist. It’s just the right amount of edge for the traditional bride.

What’s the best love advice you’ve ever received and who gave it to you?

Marry your best friend and soul mate, don’t settle until you find him. It’s important to make each other a priority and spend quality time together. Life gets busy with work and kids therefore it’s necessary to stay connected. My mother always told me that communication is key and I truly believe it’s the foundation for a relationship.
