Hello SMP brides! It’s Jess from Dressed By Jess and since my last post there have been SO many exciting developments. Currently we’re designing our invites and I have to admit the biggest challenge was picking a color scheme. I didn’t want colors that were too loud, or overly feminine, but without giving too much away we’ve incorporated a soft accent color that is shockingly NOT pink.
About six months into the wedding planning process I realized I needed help pulling together the overall aesthetics for our wedding day. I had so many ideas and felt extremely overwhelmed about how I would focus on all the small details, yet still enjoy our wedding. I was referred to a few wedding planners and designers, but I connected most with Paige of Gilded Lily Events. Paige has inspired me with her creativity and has offered invaluable advice over the past few months. I am so excited to share some of her wedding planning tips below. How do you help couples define their wedding style?
Defining your wedding style is definitely an on-going process. Just as your home décor or wardrobe has evolved over time, your wedding style will also grow from the day you start pinning until the day before you walk down the aisle. To help my clients figure out how they would like their day to look, I like to get to know them, and a little bit about their personal style as well as the story of their relationship. I ask for them to show me a few photos of what they are drawn to and then find the common thread for inspiration. I can usually pick out the key details that they keep going back to and then I will work with them to make their wedding day unique and personal.
There are plenty of ways to showcase your personality on your wedding day, but what elements are the most important?
I truly believe that love is in the details. However, couples can easily get weighed down by all of these “little” things. I like to remind brides-to-be that it is important to really zoom in on the areas that will make the most impact. If you think back on a picture of a wedding that you loved, you probably didn’t notice everything that was going on around it. Focus on what is the most important and highlight it. For an overall beautiful, cohesive look, I believe the flowers and paper goods are the most important elements. They carry the wedding day story and are usually the first and last thing that your guests will take note of.
Invitations are the guests’ first peek at the formality of the wedding along with the type of event being thrown. How can brides keep them creative, yet cohesive?
Save the Dates and invitations are the first connections that your guests will have with your wedding and it sets the tone for what to expect for your day. Before you send out your invitations, make sure you have a good idea of the color palette and key design elements that you are going to use throughout your wedding day. Custom invitations are the way to go and are not just a luxury item. Be clear with your graphic designer or artist of what you want and how they can work within your budget to make your invitation dreams come true.
Are there ways to save on wedding invitations?
There are a few ways to save on your wedding invitations including the type of printing method you choose. Letterpress and foil are both beautiful and luxurious but also come with a higher price tag. You can have the same look but choose to have your invitations digitally printed and try to limit the number of cards that you need for your suite. I would also recommend a custom stamp or digitally printed return address but splurge on calligraphy for guests’ addresses if you can!
What are some of the most unique details you’ve helped couples put into their weddings?
One of my very favorite details that I helped create for one of my couples was a custom cake backdrop. My clients had a history of writing each other love letters during their courtship and I knew that I wanted to incorporate that into their wedding design. We commissioned a calligrapher to hand letter their personal vows on a fabric backdrop that we hung behind their cake at the reception. It was such a statement and was both meaningful and beautiful! Today, they have a piece of it framed in their new home together.
What is your biggest piece of advice for brides looking to incorporate special details without breaking the bank?
If there is anything that you can do to make items “double-duty”- do it! For example, favors can double as escort cards and ceremony flowers can be moved to the reception bar to add a special touch once you have said “I Do”.
