Chic Restaurant Wedding in Toronto

Shelley + Björn are giving us major wedding day goals. Because not only did this food loving pair plan one seriously chic celebration, but they’re also pretty darn cool. Take the Bride who wowed guests with an off-the-rack J.Crew gown that she ordered online (!!), or the fuss-free restaurant setting serving up family favorites, you’re about to savor every second from the lens of Heidi Lau in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…My husband, Björn and I would honestly not change one thing about our wedding day. From the moment we got engaged in October 2014, we knew that we wanted an easy, fuss-free wedding that reflected how we are in our day-to-day lives, with a few special touches, of course! Björn and I opted for a restaurant wedding right off the bat for numerous reasons. First, food is a major part of our lives, some would even call us “foodies”, if you will! Whether we are cooking at home, or dining out at the latest and greatest restaurant to pop up in Toronto, we are all over it. Secondly, we loved the “one-stop-shop” aspect of a restaurant wedding. Having been to Boehmer many times in the past, we knew that it was the perfect place to host our special day. The nearby location on the Ossington strip (a street we often visit for weekend shopping and eating), venue size, amazing food, friendly servers, natural light-filled room and the simple existing décor, ticked all of our boxes.

Even the process of choosing my wedding dress was easy. I had perused the racks a few times for
dresses that would reflect the simple, elegant and comfortable look that I was aiming for, but I did not find anything. With a love for J. Crew in my every day life, I decided to stick with what I knew and ordered online at JCrew.com. My hesitations about ordering online were put to rest when I popped into a J. Crew store in Toronto and they measured me for the exact dress that I wanted to order, and then we placed the order together in the store – super easy! Six weeks later when the dress arrived, minimal alterations were required but I was head-over-heels in love with my dress. Simple, elegant and perfect for a wedding on a hot, record-breaking summer day! Björn got his classic, charcoal suit and crisp white tailored shirt from Sydney’s, a boutique suit shop on Toronto’s, Queen Street West. Our day started off at the stunning Shangri-La hotel where we got ready with our parents and small, but mighty wedding party. Björn and I also did our “first look” at the hotel in our suite – definitely one of the most memorable moments that we will ever have! Björn even took the liberty of putting on his lederhosen to make both me and our photographers laugh, and also to give a proper nod to his German heritage.

Following that, we scooted over to the nearby Osgoode Hall to take our wedding photos, giving us time to relax and enjoy each other’s’ company before the ceremony and reception began. The ceremony, conducted in front of the restaurant’s impressive front windows, was hands-down our favourite part of the day. We kept it short and sweet but still managed to make each other cry with our own, personalized vows – it was such a special moment to share in front of our guests, as well as the passerby’s on Ossington Street! After that, we dove into champagne, canapés and a killer three-course meal, customized by the restaurant’s head-chef Paul Boehmer, topped off with fish and pork tacos as our late night snack. Our DJ, a well-known name in the Toronto DJ-scene, came as a recommendation through the restaurant’s special events coordinator, and had all of our guests dancing into the wee hours of the night and chanting “one more song” at 2 a.m.

To help with all things “wedding design”, we worked with Big Love Weddings. It was an amazing
experience from start to finish, from our initial meeting to talk about our theme, to creating our very own “design package”, to making vendor and product suggestions all within our budget, to helping execute on the day-of – it was an incredible experience all around. Our design theme was a mix of natural elegance / rustic / comfortable chic / white & wood. We had a primarily off-white colour scheme with hints of subtle pink and peach brought in with the florals, and metallic cooper tones in small doses throughout. The venue’s beautiful wooden tables and wishbone chairs were so beautiful on their own so we wanted to keep the tablescapes relatively simple. Each guest table had a lovely bunch of fresh, garden blooms in the centre, flanked by two cooper bud vases filled with wispy greenery and simple white votives all down the centre to fill the space.

Our favourite design element of the day would have to be the multi-use garland that framed us on the floor during our ceremony, adding to the comfortable, rustic ambiance, and then was later used on the head table as our centerpiece. Another fav would have to be the chocolate chip cookie “take-homes” that we got from a local bakery in our new neighbourhood in Toronto’s east end. And lastly, how could we forget our beautiful seating chart designed by Big Love Weddings, made with Rifle Paper Co. botanical wrapping paper and hand-drawn calligraphy cards by Charlie Whiskey – stunning! Thank you again to everyone who made our day so memorable.
