Marriage Matters: 1st Anniversary + Advice for Newlyweds

This sweet couple, Emily and Dennis have a great word for all you soon-to-be newlyweds. With their first anniversary in the books they shared, “While our wedding was extremely special and meaningful to us, this first year of marriage has been the most wonderful ride and such a sweet transition into living life together as a team.” They pulled in This Girl Nicole to capture the occasion, and you can read on for more marriage words of wisdom.

From Emily… Dennis and I met in our early college years, and dated within both long and short distances for five years. We were drawn to each other both by our similarities and our differences. For example, we both love music, art, performing, and outdoor adventures; however, our differences have also played a part in creating a healthy balanced life for the both of us. I tend to be a workaholic who takes on more than I can realistically handle, while Dennis focuses his dedicated attention on few important things at a time. He reminds me to slow down and enjoy life with the heart of a child, and when necessary, we tackle life’s responsibilities together.

When Dennis and I were planning to get married, we were more excited about the marriage than the actual wedding. While our wedding was extremely special and meaningful to us, this first year of marriage has been the most wonderful ride and such a sweet transition into living life together as a team. I know we still have many years ahead of us to learn and grow, and life will bring its own bumps in the road, but for now, we have love. And ‘love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance’.

If we could give any advice to couples approaching marriage, nurturing a fresh marriage, or even a seasoned one, we would say to daily practice understanding of your partner’s point of view, continue to date each other even after you’re married and be sure to leave room for frequent laughter! Life is too short to not enjoy it to the fullest.

From This Girl NicoleWeddings get all the glory, but anniversaries indicate the dedication to the relationship and with each passing year should be celebrated as such an occasion. This sweet couple will be celebrating their first wedding anniversary in just a few weeks, (and they always say the first year is the toughest!) so what better way to celebrate how they’ve grown as a couple than documenting their everlasting love in the grand setting of Joshua Tree National Park. Colors and textures were layered to bring some life to the neutral atmosphere of Joshua Tree and encompassing Dennis and Emily’s boho chic style.

I asked Emily what was one of the best things about being married to her hubby and she answered with “Best thing about being married to Dennis in particular is knowing that no matter what kind of day I’ve had (filled with life’s responsibilities and hurry), I know I will always be greeted at home with hugs and a positive encouraging attitude from him. There’s just a fun balance at our home of laughing/joking around or having meaningful conversations about life. It’s just never boring.” Queue the “awww’s”!
